What are the benefits of state lotteries and other state-regulated games of chance?

June 25, 2010 - 3:21 am 10 Comments

Please help me.

It’s a cheap way for the state to raise money (the government, like anyone else, always wants more), and people won’t complain about it, since no one is obliged to play.

The Future Of Offshore Lottery

June 21, 2010 - 12:29 am No Comments

LOTF is offering a $1,000,000 finder’s fee to anybody who can find an investor to fund this project.

The business objective is to create an offshore lottery operation that will be innovative more cost-effective, highly profitable and simply better than the existing models.

In order to project the future, we must learn and understand the past. The lottery has been around since the beginning of recorded history. Last year, the biggest prize pool of any lottery in the world, totaling over 2 Billion Euros or $2.8 Billion Dollars was won in Spain. In March of this year, $370 Million Dollars was won in the MegaMillions lottery and is now the largest US jackpot ever.

The total 2006 revenues derived from the Gaming Industry breaks down as follows: The Casino Total was $96.1 Billion Dollars and the Lottery Total was $200 Billion Dollars. The Revenues overseas, more than doubled that of the US.

The Lottery operations overseas, although different from each other, mostly do not deduct taxes from the jackpot, unlike the US counterparts. The Spanish Christmas lottery, El Gordo or ‘The Fat One’, is the biggest lottery in the world and also one of the oldest, having started in 1812. El Gordo has the biggest prize pool of any lottery in the world. The odds of winning the El Gordo this year could reach 1 in 28,571,429 based on their projection that the jackpot could reach $4 Billion Dollars at the cost of $200 Dollars per lottery number. These consist of 10 tickets that can also be purchased separately at $20 Dollars each but the odds will increase to 1 in 285,714,286 to win.

China has 2 lotteries namely the Sports Lottery and the China Welfare Lottery seen here with total sales of $105.4 Billion Dollars last year. India has a weekly jackpot with the old SuperLotto 6/49 system.

Now, let’s look at the odds of winning in the US Lotteries. The SuperLotto, currently runs the 5 Balls to draw from 47 Balls Plus 1 MegaBall drawn from 27 Balls, with odds of 1 in 41,416,353. Jackpot starts at $7 Million Dollars. The odds of winning the PowerBall is 1 in 146,107,962. 5 Balls to Pick from 55 Balls and 1 PowerBall from 42 Balls. Jackpot starts at $15 Million Dollars. The odds of winning the MegaMillions is slightly higher than the PowerBall which is at 1 in 175,711,536. There are also 5 Balls to pick from 56 Balls and 1 MegaBall from 46 Balls. Jackpot starts at $12 Million Dollars.

After looking at the different Lottery Models, the following will be the Criteria of our Business Model. The starting jackpot will be set at $20 Million Dollars but could easily reach more than $1 Billion Dollars because it will be drawn three times a week, which is 50 drawings more. There will be 5 Balls to Pick from 57 Balls, plus 1 GigaBall from 47 Balls. The odds to win is 1 in 196,793,982.

As Owner/Operator and not as Administrators for State or Country Lotteries, we can appropriate our earnings and charitable allotments in the following manner: 50% of every dollar wagered goes back to the wagers as prizes. 25% of all ticket sales go to support the afflicted and to alleviate the plights of the poor and disenfranchised, and victims of natural calamities around the world. We will provide monetary aid to global issues concerning environment, education, health, and welfare. Approximately 25% goes back to LOTF for lottery operating costs and expenses.

Why do lotteries only give out millions to one lucky winner?

June 15, 2010 - 5:46 pm 2 Comments

I would buy tickets more often, I would think they’d sell more, if more draws were made to allow more people to win and share the millions offered.

Unfortunately your idea, while it seems sensible, flies in the face of reality and research.

When the jackpots get to crazy amounts like over $200m, there are people lining up to buy tickets. The buying frenzy gets on the news, and people will even cross state lines to buy.

Fact is, years of research and study have conclusively shown that the larger the rollover, the more tickets are sold. In fact ticket sales appear to grow exponentially with the size of the jackpot.

People in America also realize that unlike many foreign lotteries the government severely taxes the winner, and that the prize advertised is actually a lie, because it is not the actual amount that will be won. So players expect to be ripped off by both the lottery and the government when they win.

Because the role of the lottery is to sell more tickets, that ultimately raise more money for charity, both major US lottery companies have actually increased the odds of winning within the past few years. By doing so they know that there will be more rollovers, and hence more sales.

Personally, I’d be happy with an easier to win million dollar prize, where that was the actual money you won tax free. The government could tax the ticket sales, rather than the prizes. But apparently this would hurt sales, so it’s never going to happen.

El Gordo Spanish National Lottery Results

A massive 2,3 billion EUR or 3,3 billion USD is guaranteed to be paid out to participants of the Spanish El Gordo in 2008. There are over 13 thousand prizes to be won! Including 195 cash jackpots at 3 million EUR or 4.3 million USD each. Undoubtedly this has made the Spanish El Gordo one of the most known lotteries in the world.

This is a movie of how the Spanish Loteria Nacional Draw is done. More than 100 years of lotto tradition, the Christmas El Gordo lottery draw takes place yearly in the Spanish capital (Madrid) on December 22nd. The Spaniards (and surely some foreigners) even wake up early to watch (some live but most on tv) the traditional gala where the children of San Idelfonso (an elementary school in the center of Madrid) spend hours drawing the willing numbers out of huge golden drums at the national lottery headquarters. The drum on the left (see Videos of El Gordo 2008 draw below) holds the balls with eh prize amounts while the drum at right holds the balls with the numbers.

All eyes are on the drum, waiting for El Gordo (“The Fat One”) to drop out of it and the main prize to be awarded.
