If I buy 2 lotto tickets does it mean my chances of winning double?

June 25, 2010 - 3:21 am 8 Comments

If the chance of winning a 49 ball lotto game is roughly 1 in 14 million, would buying two tickets mean my chances would be 1 in 7 million?

If possible could you explain the math to me?

If there are roughly 14 million ways to win and you play 1 of those ways, you would have 1 chance in 14 million of winning. If you play 2 of those ways, each different from the other, you would have 2 chances in 14 million of winning. If you played all 14 million different ways of winning, your would have 14million chances in 14 million, or it’s certain that you would win.

If you play a different way on each ticket, each ticket you buy increases your chances by 1 in 14 million. 2 tickets = 2 in 14 million, 3 tickets = 3 in 14 million, 4 tickets = 4 in 14 million, etc.

If you bought 1000 tickets, each different, you’d have 1000/14000000 = 1/14000 = 0.00007143 chance of winning. Even with 1000 tickets, not something I’d want to count on to pay the mortgage. Even buying a million different tickets, you chances of winning would only be 0.071 or about 7 out of 100. Very bad odds even buying a million tickets.

Loser lotto tickets offset the cost of taxes on a trip I Won?

June 15, 2010 - 5:46 pm 1 Comment

I won a trip and the taxes are around 1200 dollars. I heard somewhere that if you have scratch off tickets that are losers that amount goes toward your taxes. So if I save up 1200 dollars worth of lost lotto tickets, will i not have to pay taxes. Anyone know.

You can ask your CPA, but I don’t think you can turn in losing lottery tickets as a tax deduction. It is disgusting that the government want $1,200 for a trip you won. But that’s just how it works in this country. In many other countries, if you win a trip it’s your lucky day and the government doesn’t come sniffing around for tax.
