How much would I have to spend on the lottery to have a guaranteed return?

July 14, 2010 - 7:04 am 13 Comments

How many tickets would I have to buy to get a guaranteed return playing the lottery?
Not necessarily winning the jackpot, but say if I brought £200 of tickets, how much would I win back?

Each number sequence, in the region of £14,000,000+. And you would have to have a worthwhile jackpot – which hopefully wouldn’t be shared!..

What’s a better alternative to the lottery – one that has more realistic odds of winning for less prize money?

July 11, 2010 - 9:00 am 2 Comments

I heard the Irish Lottery is good because you only need to match three numbers to get £500. Are there any lotteries which offer winnings of around the £200,000 to 800,000 mark with much more realistic odds of winning than the National Lottery?

the odds for the irish lottery are better than the national lottery, a friend of mine did win £100,000 on the Irish lottery, much more than anyone i know on the national lottery, however its still a lottery and the odds are against you, if you need money your better off investing in shares and rsking your cash that way

What is the difference between a church holding a raffle and a state having a lottery?

July 8, 2010 - 8:27 am 2 Comments

I live in a state included in the bible belt. It is illegal to have a lottery here in Alabama. Florida and Georgia both use their lottery for education. We have one of the worst education systems by state in the US. These same churches that protest the lottery hold raffles all the time to raise money for their church’s "charitable causes" (usually something significantly less important than our children’s educations). Why is it so much different in their minds than a state wide raffle?

I’m from Alabama too. We may never get another chance to vote on a lottery if governors like Riley keep getting elected. The mississippi indians have many rea$onS to keep the lotto out of Alabama. They pay off right-wing zealots to thump their bibles everytime the issue comes up. We’re lucky to have the sleazy dog tracks/bingo halls.

While the odds always favor the lottery, some stores do get more publicity when they sell winning tickets. And whether it’s luck or something more, there are stores that do beat the odds.

Is one expected to give back lottery winnings if it was a charity lottery?

July 5, 2010 - 12:21 pm 2 Comments

For example, Heart & Stroke Foundation and Princess Margaret Hospital sell lottery tickets for at least $100.00 each. Odds of winning are about 1/3 (luxury cars and homes, lump sums of cash). My question is, if you win the lump sum of money, is it expected that you will donate the money back to the cause?

Not that I’ve won or even played…I’m just curious what someone would do in that situation.

When you hand them $100 for the ‘lottery’, you are giving your donation. Probably $50 of that money is going directly to the charity. They are happy to give out the prizes, and happy for people to enjoy the prizes because they know they will have made money for the charity already.

What if you won one of the cards instead? Would you still wonder, "Maybe should I sell the car and give half the money back to the charity?" Of course not. The lump sums of cash are probably the lowest prizes by the sounds of it. If you get one, enjoy it, and enjoy knowing you still supported a good cause.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a National lottery test purchaser?

July 2, 2010 - 4:02 pm 1 Comment

A test purchaser job which involves trying to buy tickets from National Lottery outlets.

What are the good things about it and what the bad things about it?
Would you do this job???

I have never heard of such a role. I don’t think there is a problem when it comes to selling lottery tickets since the shopkeepers get commission on them so they are moltivated to sell more. Make you that you are not being scammed. There are so many scams going on, make sure you don’t become a victim.

The Lottery Film – Trailer – June 8, 2010

In a country where 58% of African American 4th graders are functionally illiterate, The Lottery uncovers the failures of the traditional public school system and reveals that hundreds of thousands of parents attempt to flee the system every year.

The Lottery follows four of these families from Harlem and the Bronx who have entered their children in a charter school lottery. Out of thousands of hopefuls, only a small minority will win the chance of a better future.

Directed by Madeleine Sackler and shot by award-winning cinematographer Wolfgang Held, The Lottery uncovers a ferocious debate surrounding the education reform movement. Interviews with politicians and educators explain not only the crisis in public education, but also why it is fixable. A call to action to avert a catastrophe in the education of American children, The Lottery makes the case that any child can succeed.

What is the best and safest way to invest lottery winnings of $8 million or more in the state of California?

June 28, 2010 - 8:48 am 10 Comments

I was wondering what are some of the safest ways to invest a lottery prize so that the money lasts long enough to pass some of it to my family? Assuming an $8 million dollar payout over 26 yrs, and indexed for inflation. I would obviously start by living within my means and not spending on things I don’t need. I am pretty disciplined financially so this would not be a problem.I am looking for low or guaranteed return on my money besides ,of course, putting it in the bank.

This is a very tough question to answer without knowing more about you and what you want to accomplish. I have been giving financial advice for over 28 years… and I would NEVER tell someone what to do with that kind of money over the phone and/or over the Internet.

Although there are very safe investments to choose from (other than bank accounts), such as: fixed annuities, equity indexed annuities, tax-free muni bonds, and U.S. government bonds (not savings bonds as their rates are incredibly low right now), my advice to you is to find a financial planner that you like and trust. That may mean having to interview 2 or 3 planners, but it important that you like their style and that you trust their advice. The best way to find a financial advisor is to talk to family and/or friends. Find out of any of them like who they work with and get a referral.

Good luck!
