When will the winner of the presidential campaign be announced?
July 2, 2010 - 4:02 pm
How long does it take after polls close to determine and announce the winner?
If PA and VA break for Obama, then it will be very likely that the networks will be able to call the electoral vote before bedtime. These states polls close at 7 and 8 pm. However, if McCain picks up even one of these two and the 2nd wave of states doesn’t reveal an overwhelming choice of Obama, then we might be in for a long night.
Remember, once either candidate reaches the magical number of 270 electoral votes then it’s over. So the only reason the margin will be important is to determine exactly how close the race was in any given state, therefore how likely it is able to be predicted.

As long as everything goes right, tommorow, right after the west coast finishes up their votes.

I think that it will be announced tomorrow night. That’s what usually happens, assuming that the loser is civil. In this case, I expect him to be mostly very civil.

In 2000 it was almost three months. But once Obama has 271 electoral votes, they’ll call the election. So probably not until the polls close on the west coast, around 7pm pst or 10 pm est.
